Misquoting Muhammad (PBUH)

written by Theresa Corbin

Recently, I was digging around for some inauthentic hadith for a project I am working on. Since, in Islam, we have a strict grading system to let us know which hadith are actually attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and which ones are just made-up, it was pretty easy to find the made-up ones.

There are tons of these made-up hadith that are just trash tossed from the sacred texts of the authentic hadith collections. Some people are the worst, wanting to manipulate the religion to suit their own desires.

misquoting-muhammad

Then I thought it might be fun to take a look at some made-up (or fabricated) hadith and make fun, er, point out how absurd they are. Again, all of these hadith were made-up and are not actually said, done, or approved by the Prophet (PBUH) himself. I would NEVER EVER make fun of any authentic hadith. And neither should you. That is dangerous territory.

But since these are all from liars, game on, playas!

1. Made-up hadith: The sneezing of a person while another is speaking is a proof that what the person is saying is the truth. (Classified fabricated by Ibn Jawzee)

Theresa’s Response: This one is kinda like believing that if a cat farts in the middle of the street, you know you are going to come into money. It’s superstition and weird at that. Muslims don’t do superstition.

2. Made-up hadith: To think for an hour is better than to be engaged in worship for a period of 60 years. (Classified fabricated by Ibn Jawzee)

Theresa’s response: No. I mean you could be thinking for an hour about how you want to kick your neighbor’s dog- an unsavory thought. And engaging in worship for 60 years is amazingly better than thinking about doing an evil deed. Like really, who’s even falling for this?

3. Made-up hadith: There isn’t a Prophet that was sent except after reaching the age of 40. (Classified fabricated by Ibn Jawzee)

Theresa’s Response: Guess whoever pulled this out of their you-know-where never heard of Jesus (AS), who happened to be a prophet from a young age and was even taken up into heaven before he turned 40. So, just no.

4. Made-up hadith: There is no good in black people. When they are hungry, they steal and when their stomach is full, they commit zina (sex outside of marriage). However they have 2 noble characteristics, which are generosity to their guests and perseverance at times of hardship. (Classified fabricated by Imam Bukhari and Ibn Jawzee)

Theresa’s response: This is outrageous. So, the racist who thought this one up was totally ignoring the authentic hadith: “… a white has no superiority over a black …” Not to mention Allah says in the Quran:

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted. (Quran, 49:13).

Allah has made us diverse so that we made know each other, not so that we can slander each other. This is disgusting. I don’t even have the language skills, beyond cursing, to say how angry stuff like this makes me.

5. Made-up hadith: To look at a beautiful face improves one’s eyesight and to look at an ugly face causes one’s eyesight to fade. (Classified fabricated by Ibn Hibbaan)

Theresa’s Response: If this were true, all pretty people with poor vision would have to do is look in the mirror. No more glasses for the good looking! HAHA.

6. Made-up hadith: Verily Allah Loves to See His servant tired and exhausted in his quest for halal things. (Classified fabricated by Ad-Daar Qutnee)

Theresa’s Response: Um, whoever made this mess up never read the Quran verse that says:

Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful. (Quran, 5:6).

Not sure what the motivation behind this one was, but maybe they were sadists?

7. Made-up hadith: Verily Allah does not accept a supplication which has a grammatical error in it. (Classified fabricated by Mula Ali Qaari)

Theresa’s Response: Man, there were even grammar nazis back in the day! Allah knows what we mean to say even before we speak it in correct or incorrect grammar.

Be on your guard, friends, and fight the fake hadith.

  1. Jazak Allah Khair, thanks for this illuminating post Corbin.
Most Muslims living in Islamic States won’t ever tell you what I am now; most Sharia Councils, Islamic organizations in power and clergy totally adore to quote wrong information and Hadith references by Imam Bukhari and Ibn Hibbaan ad nauseam.
It is also no coincidence that some of those mentioned here represent staunchly rigid understanding of Islam and I know for a fact that Deobandi madrassas clerics love promoting nonsensical stuff anti women, anti minority faith teachings that are in reality against Islam. I am sure your readers are getting upset on my giving the truth as it is analogy here, but that won’t change the fact that people distort stuff to suit their desires and many thanks to you for tackling this topic! Blessed be! always! ameen!

    1. If my readers are getting upset by your exposing corruption, then they have issues with their ego and need to check themselves. In my research and our collabs, I have found what you are saying to be so very painfully true. And I feel it is up to the youth of every generation to create a peaceful revolution of faith in each community and examine and redistribute the power of their society. We don’t see this in the Majority Muslims countries because the state uses faith as a boot to crush the necks of those it usurps power from. But Allah (SWT) is the best of planners. May the corruptors be guided to truth or destroyed by their own corruption.

  2. Probably you already know, but aside from the genuine (Shahih) and fabricated (Mawdoo’) hadith, there’s also Acceptable (Hasan) and Weak (Da’eef) or “questionable” hadith.
I don’t really understand the difference between Shahih and Hasan, especially from historical research, but both of them are generally being use.
And as for Da’eef hadith are usually not used and just kept as a record.

    1. Oh, yes, this is a very interesting area of research that I really would like to have a deeper understanding of. InshaAllah, one day. But for now it is good to know the science of hadith authentication is there keeping us straight, Alhamdulillah.

  3. Apparently people would get up to narrate hadith as a form of impressing or entertaining others…which would explain how some of these crazy fabrications came about.

  4. I am curious whether, during your research, you ever came across a hadith in which Mohammed is reported to have stated or implied by his actions that non-Muslims had any rights (other than those granted to them under a specific treaty) or should be shown any kindness.
My exploration of the hadiths is in its early stages, but I have not come across any yet.

    1. There are a great deal of these hadith, all with the highest authenticity. You can find some resources here: http://mercyprophet.org/mul/node/7471 you’ll have to scroll down the page for the article. Also check aboutislm.net in thus topic. It is a good resource. Islam teaches respect and dignity is due to all human beings. If this is not practiced by Muslims it is indefensible and un-Islamic

      1. Thank you.

I have looked at both sites and cannot find any specific section on the hadith. There are many comments made expressing opinions about Mohammed but I am looking for an instance where specific words or actions attributed to the prophet himself indicate that he intended non-Muslims to have rights, or Muslims to show non-Muslims kindness.

I consider myself reasonably familiar with the facts of Mohammed’s life and the content of the Quran, but such a source seems to have escaped my attention thus far.

I was hoping from your post that you might have spotted one.

      2. I don’t mean to troll but did you find anything?

If you asked any Christian a similar question about the teachings of Jesus I imagine that they would answer with the Parable of the Good Samaritan or the Sermon on the Mount. I have asked several Muslims, on this site, for evidence that Mohammed/the Quran taught that Islam is compatible with respect for the freedom of non-Muslim, but the more I ask the question without a satisfactory reply, the deeper grows my conviction that it is not.

    2. As salaamu alaikum
Allah says in his Noble book:
      لَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ أَنْ تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ

(what has been translated to mean)
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.

      -Sura Al-Mumtahana, Ayah 8
There are many ahadeeth regarding the just treatment of non-combatant kuffar. Such as when the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وعلى آله) (وسلم visted the dying Jewish boy which in found in Sahih Bukhari, and my apologies for not giving the reference point. Also in this article: http://www.abukhadeejah.com/how-to-conduct-oneself-with-the-jews-christians-others-even-if-they-be-tyrants/ you will find some references to the rights of the kuffar in Islam, inshaa Allah.

    1. I regret that I have not. Does that include any hadith that record Mohammed giving rights or showed kindness to non-Muslims?
